For Love of the Cause
It's funny what good can be born from a bunch of football fans that a lot of people around the country call the worst, meanest fans in the country. After all we boo everyone, even Santa Claus for christ sakes. We throw batteries at anyone who questions our devotion or dare wears an opposing team's jersey 'in our house.'
I post alot on a message board for Eagles fans - ya know, the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that, ya know, LOST THE SUPER BOWL?? Don't even get me started. It still hurts. But, it turns out, we DO have a heart, and even have it in the right place. I know it's 'just a message board,' but we all get to know each other pretty well over the course of months or years (same as many of you do here in blogland), and, because of the unique and wholehearted passion for our city and our team, form a pretty tight bond quickly, that lasts a lifetime.
This was created by Eagles fans, and for Eagles fans. It started in 2004, when a group of Eagles fans from this message board learned of a friend's serious illness. He didn't have the money to get the medical testing he desperately needed. He had nowhere to turn. So, many great fans came together to raise the money needed for a wonderful guy who needed help. People who didn't know him or never met him contributed. From this experience stemmed the idea to organize and work to help others in similar financial need, because of illness, unemployment or other similar situation. We can't make a huge difference, the size the organization is now, but we are here to do out part to make a difference nonetheless. We are fiercely loyal and we never give up. The Eagles team actually became involved, and FHF has a great relationship with them.
Fans around the country have contributed, either financially or in other ways. There's an Eagles fan club out here in Portland (I've written about them before, and thank God or I never could have survived out here) that's become involved. There's a great guy out here named Fred, who really has put in a phenominal effort raising money and organizing raffles, and that has raised hundreds and hundreds of dollars for the organization. I myself am on the Grant Committee, which reviews and discusses pending applications for assistance.
Anyway, I just wanted to give props to this organization. It may be small, for now, but it, and we, have a gigantic heart. We're not all jerks, we really do care, and we'd do anything for each other.
