The Prince of Darkness
Yes, he's alive and living here in Portland, and, as you might have guessed, he's a trial attorney. More specifically, he's the opposing defense attorney trying to win a seemingly unwinable defense verdict - against MY BOSS!
He's nukking futz. Seriously. Manic depressive, abusive and, to put it frankly, a dick. He knows we have him by the balls. He's trying anything and everything against our "star witness" and failing miserably, and probably buying himself an early express ticket to Six Feet Under.
I watched the videotape today of the perpetuation deposition, taken in two parts over two different days. The second part, Monday night, was by far the worst of the two; before that we thought part one could not be topped. Well, it could. When I called the videographer and court reporter to schedule them for part deux, they were actually excited and looking forward to coming back to hear more of this. If only I could have been there!!! He did everything but physically attack our witness. He insulted him repeatedly, he tried to twist things around to get him to say things that weren't true, he tried everything. Funny thing is, the doctor wouldn't budge. He kept his cool completely, telling POD, in essence, 'I've already answered this question 10 times now, sir, but if you insist I'll answer it again. I'm just trying to do the right thing, be honest, and get this over with, as I don't appreciate how I'm being treated.' From what I heard, the 'off camera' antics were even worse - screaming at the witness, and my boss, at the top of his lungs, slinging insults, accusations, and outright lies. I hope we kick his mothafucking ass.
Unfortunately, the court system here sucks, and I mean sucks. It's nearly impossible to get a plaintiff's verdict in this county, let alone this state. People just don't want to admit that a doctor not only made a mistake, but that the injured person should be justly compensated. It's extremely rare, no matter how damning the evidence. My boss has 'lost' many trials that he clearly should have won - all the evidence was in our favor, the only thing missing was a signed confession from the defendant admitting negligence and begging the court to punish him justly. This is a clear cut case of negligence, let's hope the good guys prevail. We can't let that bastard POD beat us.
I actually used to work with the POD before I came to this this firm. The side of him I saw then was completely different. He was always respectful to me, always appreciative, even cracked jokes. Sure he was a little intense, but some attorneys just are that way. But I've completely lost any respect for him that I ever had.
If we lose this case, I think I may have to quit law, because it's just not right for that asshole to win. Portland is a small town, relatively speaking (I'm from Philly so to me it's REALLY small), and my boss and the POD know each other, and have worked together many times. How his secretary can put up with this is beyond me, I'd have killed him by now.
